In the year 2021, 45 lakh units of blood were collected, which increased to 80 lakh units in 2022.
At the same time, in 2023, for the first time, 1.29 crore units of blood were collected in more than three thousand blood banks of the country. Of these, the highest 18.11 lakh units of blood were donated in more than 400 blood banks of Uttar Pradesh. After this, 15.20 lakh units of blood were collected in Maharashtra and 10.51 lakh units in Gujarat. You can donate half a liter of blood at a time: According to the American Red Cross Society, a woman’s body has 4.3 liters of blood and a man’s body has an average of 5.7 liters of blood. Every day a healthy person produces 400 to 2,000 milliliters of blood. A person can donate up to half a liter of blood at a time.
Blood donation had decreased by three lakh units in the first wave of Covid-19
The government has informed that before the Covid-19 pandemic, in the year 2018, 124 blood banks in the country were registered on the e-Raktkosh portal. In these, 35 lakh units of blood were collected in the whole year. In 2019, blood donation increased to 43 lakh units. However, during the first wave of Corona in 2020, it declined and only 40 lakh units of blood were collected.
